National Legislative Concerns
National
PTA is promoting a "Five Cents Makes Sense for Education" campaign
to bring attention to the fact that the federal investment in education
does not meet the demonstrated needs in our states and communities. At
the federal level, less than 1 cent of every budget dollar goes to
the U.S. Department of Education K-12 programs.
LESS THAN 2 CENTS, despite the fact that:
- Schools face record high enrollments: 54 million students projected
by 2007.
- Only
about 40 percent of all eligible children are fully served by
Title I - a program for economically and educationally disadvantaged
students.
- Congress
pays just 18 percent of the Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act, ignoring a 28-year-old promise to fund 40 percent of the
average per pupil expenditure to help pay the extra cost of educating
children with disabilities.
- Policy
makers agreed that Title I, the largest of the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act programs, needs $16 billion to implement
this year; yet just $11.7 billion is being spent.
National
PTA is asking its members to take part in the "Five
Cents Makes Sense for Education" by sending postcards and electronic
letters to their elected officials in Congress, and asking them to
support an increase in funding for education. For more information, or
to obtain a copy of the suggested letters, go to the National PTA's
Five Cents Make
Sense for Education page. You can send an email
or letter to your elected officials.

Links to Legislative Information of Interest to Parents and Educators
Here
are some links to sites frequently containing legislative information,
information about candidates, or voter information. If you
know of others or have ideas for lectures, open forums, or activities,
please contact us. While
individual candidates or publications may have their own opinions,
this (like all official PTA activities) is a non-partisan effort.
The goal is to keep PTA members informed and to encourage participation,
not to lobby for any particular side of an issue!
Find additional useful links on a variety of parenting and child
advocacy topics at the National
PTA's web page. The Arizona
Republic and East Valley Tribune are
also resources for current information about issues being discussed
in the legislature, as well as proposed bills.
